Cover letter writing

How to write a cover letter that adds something useful.

A cover letter should explain why your evidence fits the role—not simply repeat your resume. Use a concise structure, a real example and an intentional closing.

A practical four-paragraph structure

  1. Opening: Identify the role and what genuinely interests you about the opportunity.
  2. Relevant evidence: Explain one or two achievements directly connected to requirements in the posting.
  3. Fit and contribution: Describe how your experience could support the employer's goals without overstating what you know.
  4. Close: Thank the reader and express interest in a discussion.

Keep the letter targeted and easy to scan; a long generic letter often adds less than a short, specific one.

Adaptable cover letter example

Dear Hiring Team,

I am applying for the [Role] position at [Company]. I am interested in your focus on [specific responsibility or business goal mentioned in the posting].

In my work at [Employer], I [accurate action you took], which contributed to [verified outcome or improvement]. That experience is relevant to your need for [job requirement].

I would welcome the opportunity to bring my experience in [true, relevant capability] to your team. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
[Name]

Replace placeholders with facts. Do not make up a company's goals, impressive metrics or a personal connection.
